Zhang Jize (1926-2023)  Dr. Zhang Jize was the fifth-generation inheritor of the prestigious Menghe Medical Tradition and a nationally renowned specialist in spleen-stomach disorders. He served as vice president of Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine, council member of the inaugural Menghe Medical Heritage Society, and former chair of the editorial board of Jiangsu Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine. A professor and chief physician, he built his clinical practice around internal medicine with a particular focus on digestive disorders.

Building on the therapeutic framework established by his father, Professor Zhang Zesheng, Dr. Zhang developed distinctive expertise in atrophic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and colitis. In his seminal paper published in Jiangsu Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, he identified deficiency of the middle jiao complicated by qi stagnation and cold retention as the core pathogenesis of atrophic gastritis. He formulated signature prescriptions including the Wenyang Jianwei Decoction (Warm Yang and Strengthen the Stomach Formula) and Shugan Hewei Decoction (Soothe Liver and Harmonize the Stomach Formula), achieving notable clinical results.

Based on his analysis of gastric mucosal pathology, he advocated a method of boosting qi and invigorating blood circulation, demonstrating in select patients the reversal of both mucosal atrophy and intestinal metaplasia. His approach of soothing the liver and strengthening the spleen proved particularly effective for chronic colitis.

Beyond gastroenterology, Dr. Zhang established empirical formulas for refractory conditions including hyperbilirubinemia, bronchial asthma, migraine, and idiopathic edema, with consistently strong results.

Dr. Zhang authored the 300,000-word Collection of Medical Cases and Discourses by Zhang Zesheng, issued in a national print run of 10,000 copies. He also led the development of the "Professor Zhang Zesheng Computer-Aided Diagnostic System for Spleen-Stomach Disorders," which received a Fourth Prize for Scientific Research Achievement from the Jiangsu Provincial Government. In 1990, he delivered a special lecture on "Pattern Differentiation and Treatment of Atrophic Gastritis" at an academic conference in Japan. Over his career, he published 28 academic papers, several of which锟斤拷including his seminal work on atrophic gastritis锟斤拷received outstanding paper awards. His legacy is permanently recorded in the second volume of Zhonghua Zhongyi Kunlun (The Kunlun of Chinese Medicine).

Zhang Zesheng (1895-1985)  Zhang Zesheng was a foundational figure in modern Chinese internal medicine and a master clinician celebrated for his expertise in gastroenterology and complex disorders. Born in Danyang, Jiangsu, he joined Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine in 1956 as director of internal medicine and chief physician. He later became a professor and doctoral advisor at Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, appointed in 1982 as one of the first TCM doctoral supervisors by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee. In 1977, the State Council honored him as an "Expert in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Gastric Diseases and Complex Disorders."

His public service included terms as a deputy to the Danyang County People's Congress, executive council member of the Jiangsu Provincial Association of Chinese Medicine, and standing committee member of the Jiangsu Provincial CPPCC. His legacy is permanently recorded in the second volume of Zhonghua Zhongyi Kunlun (The Kunlun of Chinese Medicine), the definitive chronicle of China's master practitioners.
